Road to Coach Jeremy’s 100-Mile Race: 115 Days to Go

Jeremy Scherer running on trail

I’ve been running…a little bit anyway!

For some reason, now that it’s June, it seems like October is a LOT closer. Like less than four months until race day! Maybe it’s getting more real because the finisher’s buckle design was released recently. It looks epic!

Training Update

Running has been going well. I haven’t been logging a ton of miles yet because I still have a couple of pesky Ironman 70.3s to get out of the way first. I think they have provided a great distraction. I know I still need to swim and ride plenty, and it has provided some great cross training.

Most of my training weeks have been 9-12 hours with a few exceptions. I did a 5-day bike ride a couple of weeks ago that made for a 22-hour week. Beyond that, I’ve had a couple of weekends with more run volume. Instead of one really long run, it might look like a Friday long run, Saturday shorter run, and another long run on Sunday. I’ve had a few weekends with 30-35 miles. Nowhere near 100 miles, but long enough to know I’m feeling good running on slightly fatigued legs. I have a few more of these weekends set aside in the next few months, and I hope to get up to 50-60 miles over the course of 3-4 days before October.

Mental Update

I think I am in a great space mentally. I’m definitely not fixated on The Wolverine State 100, but it is lingering in the back of my mind like big events tend to do. With other races between now and October, I have just enough distraction to not worry about it too much. I’m still excited for the race, and up for the challenge.

I got to catch up with my friend Ryan a few weeks ago! He is signed up for the race also, but he lives on the other side of the country so we don’t get to see each other much. It was great to get out and catch up while running a few miles together!

Equipment Update

I haven’t been in love with any of my current running shoes. I usually rotate between 3-5 pairs of running shoes, so I only wear each pair 1-2 times per week. In the past, I have always had a pair or two that I loved. You know – the shoes you put on, they fit perfectly and just make you want to go out and run. Manufacturers always end up changing their models at some point, but I have always been able to fall in love with a new pair. Now, everything I’m running in feels a little meh. I’m on the hunt for my new favorite pair. When I find them, I will be stocking up for sure!

I’ll be racing IM Rockford 70.3 this weekend. After that IM Louisville 70.3 in August and then the Wolverine State 100 in October. Happy training!
