Road to Coach Jeremy’s 100-Mile Race: 166 Days to Go

Man running on trail

Why Am I Even Doing This?

The short answer – I have no idea, lol!

The long answer – I might have an idea, but it is hard to put into words. And frankly, it’s very hard to put into words when people ask me. So usually I give some version of “I just want to see if I can do it” or “it sounds like fun”, etc. But ever since I signed up, I have really been trying to figure out what is compelling me to give it a go. Running 100 miles is excessive; there is no way to justify running that far. Yet, here I am planning on running 100 miles this fall. But why?

Honestly, I feel like there are so few moments where one truly feels alive, so I really crave those times. Most days, weeks, months and even years seem to blend together and be somewhat of a Groundhog’s Day. But then you have those moments that are unique, eye opening, and filled with emotion. A wedding, funeral, or the birth of a child are great examples. Those days are unlike any other, and they are often filled with pure, raw emotions.

For me, standing on the start line (and crossing the finish line) of a big race can be one of those moments. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to compare a race or event to the birth of my kids, my wedding, etc. However, for me, there’s nothing like standing on the edge of the water, wearing a wetsuit, listening to the National Anthem and waiting to jump in the water for an Ironman. In those moments I feel ALIVE.

I’m grateful for the ability to do hard things.

I’m thankful for those who support me in my crazy endeavours.

I’m wondering if I can complete the task at hand.

I’m excited to see how my training translates into performing.

I’m worried about the possibility of failing or a DNF.

But more than anything, I’m feeling real, raw emotions that only seem to come around a couple of times per year.

I can only assume the Wolverine State 100 will provide all of these feelings and more. All I can do at this point is take it day by day and try to get to the start line healthy and ready to go.
