Road to Coach Jeremy’s 100-Mile Race: 198 Days to Go
Support is Coming in Now!
Well I received some great news recently…I have a friend who has signed up for the Wolverine State 100, and he is excited to tackle this together. His name is Ryan, and I mentioned him in a previous post. He is the one who is already signed up for another ultra this fall. However, these races will be six weeks apart, not two as I thought before. I feel WAY better about this! The odds are slim that we will even run much of the race together, but it is nice knowing that a friend will be out there sharing the trail with me.
Beyond that, a lot of people have shown interest in joining the crew or even running portions of the race with me. It seems like people are in awe (myself included) at the thought of running 100 miles straight and want to be a part of it. Hopefully I’m not overselling it, because I think it will be dreadfully boring, lol!
My wife and I had dinner with her cousins and their spouses last week. As soon as one of her cousins showed up, he asked if I was still planning on doing the race and if he could come up and run some of it with me! He said he doesn’t think he has ever run more than a mile, but he was just pumped for me and wanted to be a part of the journey. I immediately said yes, and was excited to think of sharing a few miles with someone. Plus, I think he has the perfect personality to help take my mind off the running for a few miles. Maybe I will become a regular Forrest Gump!
I also had a chance to chat with Nancy, a fellow C26 Coach, who has TONS of experience with ultra running and other ultra endurance events. She is definitely a wealth of information, and I will continue to lean on her as I get further into training and closer to race day.
Getting Through the Upcoming “Smaller” Races
My next order of business is to get a couple of these pesky Ironman 70.3 races out of the way. I have one in June and one in August. Currently, I think I will mainly focus on the race in June, and then start picking up the run training before the race in August. After that race, the run volume will really ramp up for the two months until the WS100.
I plan on dedicating a few weekends throughout the summer to some extra running volume. I’m assuming there will be some extra long runs, double run days, and maybe three runs in 24 hours (evening, morning, evening) to get ready for this event. I’m also considering attempting a run in the middle of the night this summer. A few years ago, I did a 24-hour marathon with a couple of friends. We ran every four hours, and I quickly discovered running in the dead of night isn’t exactly my favorite pastime. Maybe this will go differently, who knows?
Thanks for sharing my journey with me, more to come soon!
